Commercial Airline Training

Overview

At Cubic, I worked on a suite of commercial airline training experiences designed to teach critical cabin crew, ground crew, and flight deck procedures using interactive simulations on mobile and desktop platforms. These modules used personalized instructor avatars, scenario‑based training, and light gamification to improve engagement and knowledge retention for airline staff.

My Role

As a Technical Level Designer / Senior Technical Designer, I focused on interaction design, UI/UX implementation, and scenario scripting across multiple training modules. This included iterating on user flows, designing mini‑games and assessment mechanics, and working closely with airline subject matter experts to ensure procedures matched real‑world operations.

Key Training Modules

  • Cabin Crew Door Operations
Designed and iterated an interactive training module where a personalized avatar guides cabin crew through main door orientation and operations. Training includes mini‑games to test knowledge of door components and a four‑phase learning flow covering normal and emergency door operations for main doors and exits.

  • Ground Crew Tire Inspection
Built a virtual training scenario in which ground crew learn how to inspect aircraft tires for abnormal wear and damage. Trainees perform an emergency inspection on eight aircraft tires and must correctly identify critical deficiencies and recommend follow‑up actions.

  • Captain and First Officer Preflight / In‑Flight Checks
Helped implement a cockpit‑focused training experience where pilots and first officers practice full preflight and in‑flight checklists, including abnormal and emergency scenarios. A personalized instructor avatar guides trainees through correct procedures and reinforces decision‑making under pressure.

Design & Technical Contributions

  • Redesigned and extended multiple UIs for different aircraft systems, improving clarity of information and interaction patterns across modules.

  • Added secondary mechanics and gamified elements (scoring, feedback, progressive challenge) to increase engagement while preserving procedural accuracy.

  • Worked with artists, engineers, and instructional designers to ensure each module was technically solid, visually clear, and aligned with training objectives and platform constraints (mobile and desktop).
